It is performed in the patients with class III obesity (BMI over 40) and class II obesity (BMI between 35 and 39.9) who suffer from illnesses caused by obesity (high blood pressure, phlebitis, type II diabetes, degenerative diseases of joints and spine, woman´s infertility, high cholesterol, dyspnea, etc.). The reason for the surgery is always prevention or treatment of those illnesses and the improvement in life quality and expectancy of the obese patient. After this surgery no frequent post–surgical checks are necessary, which is a difference from other gastric surgeries.
A minimally invasive operation is performed – laparoscopically, from five small incisions under general anesthesia. So it is possible to quickly return to normal life. The stomach is longitudinally stitched using a special tool (endostappler) with titanium clamps and the outer part is simultaneously separated so that only a tube with a volume of 80 – 150 ml remains. This creates a feeling of satiety after a small amount of food and a patient restricts food intake and loses weight.
After the operation
The patient gets up from the bed in the evening after the surgery. However, the patient is not allowed to either drink or eat for two days and receives all important nutrients intravenously. On the third day, the patient starts to drink pure cold water sip by sip. The patients also gradually receive added milk and broth. Only from the 8th day may the patient start with thin blended food. And after four weeks the patient is allowed to change to normal food whilst respecting dietary recommendations. Discharge is possible on the fourth postoperative day. Usual work incapacity is approximately 2-4 weeks.
An appropriate part of treatment is physical activity, which is not overly limited after the stitches are removed.
It is important for the patient after sleeve gastrectomy to cooperate with the clinic and to follow certain dietary restrictions. It is especially important to give up sweet liquid beverages (Coca-Cola, energy drinks, etc.). It is good to chew each mouthful thoroughly and avoid certain risky foods (undercooked chunks of meat, orange pulp, etc.). Violation of these rules can lead to vomiting, repeated indiscipline may lead to serious health complications. It is also appropriate to eat at least five times a day and significantly limit fatty foods.
