Breast Reduction

Prague Medical Institute / Services  / Plastic Surgery / Breast Reduction
breast reduction surgery

In the case of breast hypertrophy, the breasts are too large, and the excessive size and weight amend the flexibility of the tissue and causes an ache in the back muscles. Since the breasts are also too big compared to the morphology of the patient, they also seem unattractive. Breast attrition surgery minimizes the size of the breasts, corrects ptosis and resolves both functional and aesthetic problems. The procedure can be performed from the age of seventeen if the condition is severe, though it is commonly advised that one waits till they are sure that they won’t get pregnant again.

The procedure leaves scars, the length of those depends on the degree of hypertrophy and ptosis. The scar is usually in the form of an inverted “T”, “L” or “I”. Of course, plastic surgeons try their best to minimize scarring as much as possible and monitor the patient after the operation to make sure that the scars are healing properly. Once the breasts take on a symmetrical curve the scars with being subjected to personalized care. Dermopigmentation allows the visible scars to be reduced, particularly around the areola.

The outcome of the procedure is better if the wound is restrained i.e. if the texture of the patient’s tissue is satisfactory and the care regime is perfectly followed. The procedure itself only takes about two hours and is carried out under general anesthesia. The breast remains natural, is sensitive to hormonal changes and breastfeeding remains possible.

Who is it for?

Some women face some serious problems on account of having very large breasts whether this is due to the genetic predisposition, hormonal changes or after pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is a real both every-day and health complication as they often suffer from headaches and neck/backaches. Breast reduction is a procedure for surgically reshaping exceptionally large breasts to increase comfort and satisfaction. Large breasts can dominate a woman’s appearance and give an unbalanced physical profile. Breast uplift with reduction can reduce the breast size and make them look better and firmer.

Get Prepared

Make sure you will get time off work (depending on the operation and the nature of your job). You will need support and help from the family and friends in the recovery period (avoiding physically demanding jobs, important social events, etc.); if needed (and possible), arranging for children care. No acute illnesses should occur in the period of at least three weeks before the planned breast reduction operation (a viral disease, a cold, etc.). If so, it is necessary to inform us. Get a baseline mammogram before surgery and perhaps one after surgery to help detect any future changes in your breast tissue.

One week before the operation, do not take any medications containing acetylsalicylic acid (such as Acylpyrin, Aspirin, Alnagon, Miron etc.). It might increase bleeding during and after the breast reduction surgery. Ideally, one month (minimum two weeks) before the procedure women should stop taking hormonal contraception or replacement to prevent thromboembolism. Consult your GP or your surgeon in Prague regarding other medications you take regularly. Bring your usual medicine and pills, if possible in the original packaging. It is recommended to stop or considerably reduce smoking two weeks before the operation. If you are a smoker, don’t forget to bring nicotine patches with you. Breast reduction surgery requires the use of elastic bra after the procedure. You can either bring your own, or you can buy them at the clinic. We recommend buying them after the consultation with your surgeon who will try the elastic garments on and decide which size and type are suitable for you.
Ideally, women should not have their period when operated. If they do, they need to inform their doctor.

How Is It Done?

Incisions are made around the areolae and down into the folds under the breast. The excess glands, fat, and skin, are removed, the organs are remodeled, and the areolae are repositioned up in the center of the newly reshaped breast.

The breast reduction surgery takes approximately three to four hours and is performed under general anesthetic.

After Surgery

Breast reduction procedure requires two, sometimes three overnight stays at the clinic and a two-week rest period. A re-bandage is done at the clinic on the third to fifth day after leaving the hospital. Then particular compressive bra is worn. It is not advisable to sleep on the side, and also all movements involving lifting arms up should be avoided. In the first two months after the operation, it is not recommended to go to a swimming pool as there is a high risk of acquiring an infection. Avoid bras with stays and underwires for 4-6 weeks. Avoid lifting anything over 5 pounds for two weeks.

Possible Reactions

  • Usually, your temperature may slightly rise for two to three days. An analgesic can easily ease the discomfort connected to any possible pain in the area operated upon.

  • You may not have sensation in the nipples. This usually returns as your body recovers.
  • Most of the discoloration and swelling will subside in 2-4 weeks. Your breasts will feel firm to the touch.
  • Scars may be red and angry looking for six months. In time, these usually soften and fade.
  • Your first menstruation following surgery may cause your breasts to swell and hurt.

  • Post-operative bleeding, or bleeding caused by insufficient post-operative care at home
  • Swelling, Wound rupture caused by physical strain
  • Prolonged healing (especially if you smoke

  • Imperfect effect resulting from non-observance of the post-operative instructions
  • You may have random, shooting pains for a few months.

Back To Normal

Following uneventful recovery, it is normally possible to return to work and resume usual activities (excluding exercise) within three weeks of the operation. Regular physical activity, including exercise, can be resumed within two months.

The scars remain but fade considerably with time. The result of the operation is long-lasting and remarkably noticeable.

We also offer the reduction of so-called gigantomastia, enormous breasts, which requires large gland, fat and skin removals. Areolae reduction, resulting in an overall more pleasing aesthetic effect, is also offered by our clinic.
