Otoplasty

otoplasty

The position, form, and dimensions of the ear can be improved by surgery known as otoplasty. This procedure is used to correct malformations such as protruding ears by enlarging the cartilage which then sticks out and detaches the auricle. This can also be done by cartilage relief and remove placation to unfold the auricle and make the “detached” ear visible.

The surgery can be carried out at any age but is usually done in childhood starting from the age of seven and is performed under local anesthesia.

An unobtrusive incision is made behind the ear which causes the ear to be “stuck down” so that the auricle is relieved to restore a normal morphology. Transitory pain occurs for a day or two but usually subsides due to the use of analgesics during the postoperative recovery.

Otoplasty is meant to recreate the ear’s natural shape while maintaining proportion and balance between the ears and the face. The correction of malformed ears improves the person’s well-being and eliminates potential educational and psychological problems, especially in children.

Who Is It For?

Protruding ears are often made fun of as they attract people’s attention. Adults consider it to be a cosmetic problem while children face mockery by their peers. Prominent ears lower a person’s self-confidence, are a source of embarrassment and often limit the individual’s choice in hairstyles. It is a very common ear abnormality and can be easily solved by ear pinning surgery.

Get Prepared

You will need to take some time off work to get the required rest post-operation. During the recovery period, you will also need support and help from family and friends as you will not be able to do physically demanding jobs, attend social events, etc. In case you have young children you might also need to arrange childcare. Make sure that you don’t have any acute sickness, such as a viral illness or cold, for at least three weeks before your scheduled temporal lift surgery; please inform us in case it does occur. No medications were containing acetylsalicylic acid, such as Acylpryin, Aspirin, Alnagon, Mineral, etc., should be taken a week before the operation. Such medicines are blood thinners which may increase bleeding during and after the selective facelift surgery. If women are taking hormonal contraception or replacement, they should stop doing so a month (minimum two weeks) before the temporal lift to prevent thromboembolism. Bring your usual medicine and pills, if possible in the original packaging. Smokers are encouraged to stop or at least considerably reduce smoking two weeks before the operation, and make sure you bring nicotine patches with you. It is required to wear elastic garments after the procedure which you can buy from the clinic or bring your own. We would recommend that you buy them after consulting your surgeon to decide on which size and type are most suitable for you. Ideally, women should not have their period during the operation but in case they do, they should inform their doctor.

How Is It Done?

The skin behind the auricles are loosened, the cartilage and adjacent are remodeled in the surgery. This way the ear is repositioned closer to the head. The incision is made behind the lobe so that the scar is hidden and not easily visible.

Surgery

The surgery lasts for less than an hour and is performed under local anesthesia. The client can also choose to have it done under intravenous sedation, which is more comfortable because the patient sleeps during the operation.

After Surgery

The customer has to stay at the clinic overnight after the operation. The ears are fixated by a bandage which is worn for two weeks and is changed on the second and fourth day after the operation. It is recommended to wear a protective band at night for three weeks after the bandages are removed. It is also necessary to pay particular attention to the regular hygiene of the area. Sometimes ears can be a little bit sensitive, but this is a typical postoperative symptom which quickly subsides.

It is important to rest, lying on the back with the head and body slightly elevated until the bandages are removed. It is also advised to use two pillows on each side to avoid putting pressure on your ears as you roll over to your side, this would harm the operated area and result in post-operative complications.

Incision Care

Once you’re back home, you can wash your hair with tepid water and mild (for example, baby) shampoo, within five to seven days of the surgery. You need to be careful when drying your hair and use a soft towel. You should clean the area behind the ears with a disinfectant put on cotton wool buds after the bandages have been removed. It is not advised to treat chemically your hair (dying, perming) until several weeks after the operation and after consulting your doctor.

Possible Reactions

It is possible that your temperature rises slightly for two to three days. You may also experience tightness and partial loss of sensitivity in the treated area, but this is quite common and disappears soon. An analgesic can also easily ease the discomfort.

Possible Complications

Post-operative bleeding, or bleeding caused by insufficient post-operative care at home
Swelling, Prolonged healing, Haematomas, Infection of the Imperfect wound effect resulting from non-observance of the post-operative instructions.

Back To Normal

You can return to work and resume normal non-exercise activity within a week after the operation if no complications occur. Regular physical activity including exercise should not be resumed until three weeks after the ear pinning surgery.

Result

The results are remarkably noticeable and permanent.

Extra

Ear pinning surgery depends on the client’s wishes and is tailored to their needs. If only one of the ears is prominent, the surgeon may suggest operating on both ears to ensure the same position and angle. It is also possible to correct the size of enormous lobes.
